Historically, from the late Victorian era (1837-1901) to the Edwardian era (1901-1910) in England, and during the "Belle Epoque" era in France, craftsmanship was at its technical pinnacle, and aristocrats had their personal artisan make a variety of daily necessities, without regard to cost. They enjoyed a culture that valued refined quality and craftsmanship.

 This devotion to precision has always captured my curiosity. While working for a long-established maker in Japan, I conducted extensive research on the leather products made in the late 19th century into the early 20th century. Subsequently, I worked for a luxury maker to acquire and perfect traditional techniques used in France.

 Such research and training culminated in my Nowell line of products. These embellishments will add subtle elegance and polish to any ensemble., each model is studded with a universal essence that transcends time and international borders.

THIN AND DELICATE CONSTRUCTION WITH A TIME-CONSUMING PROCESS, BECAUSE OF ITS SIMPLICITY

Delicate craftsmanship born from Simplicity

 The delicate and thin construction, greatly influenced by leather products from the aforementioned era, serves as the foundation of my construction. Additionally, the allure of dress shoes was one of the reasons I entered this industry, particularly design inspiration from vintage styles.

 Leather goods from the late 19th to early 20th century often featured decorative designs with many curves, placing utmost importance on elegance. Each leather piece was crafted to be extremely thin, sewn with delicate stitching, and finished with great care. However, this required high technical skill and involved significant production risks, leading to a gradual simplification over time, making such craftsmanship nearly unseen in modern times. In terms of materials, alongside exotic leathers, calf leather (the skin of young cattle) is considered the most elegant, a notion that remains unchanged in the world of gentlemen's shoes.

 From the perspective of durability, using thick leather from mature cattle with thicker threads and not spacing the stitches too closely results in greater longevity. This can be easily understood by comparing leather hiking boots with dress shoes.

 Nowell has dedicated years to pursuing such delicate craftsmanship while striving to create products that are as durable as possible. For instance, the fine stitching is challenging to achieve with the hand-sewing or machines typically used in leather goods. I also invest considerable effort into the thickness of the leather for each part and the unseen core materials. Moreover, despite the thinness, I employ a special technique* that incorporates air between the outer leather and the accompanying lining, creating a plump and substantial presence.

Calf leathert has a finer and more supple feel than that of adult cattle.
Finished by anilines dyes that are used to give a transparent finish to the material. Each color is dyed by color samples brought directly to the tanneries.

PERSONALIZE

In addition to stitch customization, the made-to-order service allows you to pick custom materials and colors based on existing product designs. I’m also open to bespoke projects and commissions to help you create a unique product based on your original design. Feel free to contact me using the contact form.

BESPOKE

If you would like to have an original design, I can create a product using your desired style, size, materials, etc. Regarding exotic leathers, I will also arrange for materials that are not in stock as much as possible upon request. Depending on your design, there are materials that might not be suitable and cannot be used.

MADE TO ORDER

If you like an existing product design, you can request that product to be made to order with different materials and stitch colors. For exotic leathers, it is also possible to combine multiple different materials or different colors of the same material.
I can also arrange materials that are not in stock, but depending on the model, there are materials that might not be suitable and cannot be used.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

I select and use leather that has a natural texture. As a result, blood lines, wrinkles associated with the joints that animals originally have, and countless scars that the animals have sustained appear on the surface.

 While I do my best to avoid scratches during the cutting process, some may be unavoidable depending on the size of the pieces.
